A TASTE OF LEISURE

WEEKLY BLOG POSTS

One of the South African’s favourite resorts, imposing and impressive, the elegent five-star Sugar Beach unfurls along the sun-
drenched, sheltered bay of Flic-en-Flac, bordered by crystalline waters, manicured gardens and one of the most picturesque
beaches on the island.

Why Slip Slop Slap is still vital on an island holiday

Back in the 80s, one of the most successful cancer awareness campaigns was launched in the Land Downunder, Australia. Hosted by a friendly seagull, Sid, the public was reminded of the importance of three easy ways to protect themselves against skin cancer.

More than twenty years later, the advice is still sound as we become increasingly aware of climate change and the hazards of too much ‘fun in the sun’.

While enjoying a summer break at one of our Indian Ocean island resorts the last thing one wants to hear about are the dangers involved, but the advice is pretty easy to follow and makes plenty of sense.

The regime is simple:

Slip on a thin shirt or covering, like a sarong, something to cover your shoulders and back specifically, as that is where most sunburn happens. Loose-fitting kaftans are perfect for this, for all ages and genders. You get to look stylish while still able to enjoy the freedom of movement and air flow!

Slop on a dollop of 50+ SFP sunscreen over that aquiline nose and face, arms and don’t forget the feet. For anyone who has experienced sunburnt feet, you have my absolute sympathy. A waterproof variety of sunscreen is best for children as it requires less frequent application, and it does away with the constant nagging to come over to the brolly and put it on! Call it warpaint or something interesting to make it appealing to those young minds.

Slap on a hat. This can never be emphasised enough! A light-weave hat, whether from straw or a peak cap, is an important first line of defence against heatstroke; the second, is common sense. The covering allows for airflow while reducing the effects of direct sun onto the head.

The Australian campaign updated their message in 2007 with the addition of ‘Seek and Slide’ which entailed Seeking shade if overheated and Sliding on wraparound sunglasses for extra eye protection.

No matter which of our island resorts in the sun you visit, this is all good advice and will halt skin cancer in its tracks, while you’ll still be able to enjoy the well-earned vacation!
